Oil palm seed dormancy has not been widely studied and its classification is unclear. The objectives of this study were: (i) to determine the effect of the method of breaking dormancy using a de-operculation machine compared with a dry-heat method; (ii) to evaluate the effect of GA3
on the germination of de-operculated seed; and (iii) to understand the kind of seed dormancy through the response of seed germination to operculum removal and to GA3 application. Three different seed weights (light, medium and heavy) were used to facilitate the use of the de-operculation
machine. The results showed that the method of operculum removal by machine gave better results than the dry-heat method for both the germination percentage (the protrusion of cotyledonary petiole) and the normal germination percentage (germinated seed producing shoot and root). The germination
of heavy and medium-weight seeds was higher than that of the light seeds. The de-operculated seeds treated with 100 mg L-1 GA3 gave a significantly higher germination over the control. It can be postulated that oil palm seed dormancy may be classified as a complex dormancy
of mechanical restriction and morphophysiological dormancy.
