Halopriming corn seeds improves seed emergence and carbohydrate metabolism under salinity stress

The effect of salt stress and halopriming on seed emergence and seedling growth of corn was investigated at Dankkok University, Republic of Korea in 2014. The experimental design was a 2-factor factorial arranged in a completely randomised design with four replications. The first factor was halopriming (20, 40 and 60 mM solution of NaCl, Na2SO4 or KNO3) and the second factor was salinity stress level (0.7 ds m-1 as control and 8 ds m-1 NaCl solution). Salt stress decreased seedling emergence, seedling growth, GA3 concentration and α-amylase activity in corn seeds but that emergence time, ABA concentration and lipid peroxidation were increased under salinity stress. Priming with KNO3 increased seedling emergence, seedling dry weight, α-amylase activity, carbohydrate metabolism, GA3 concentration and reduced lipid peroxidation, ABA concentration and time to 50% emergence compared with other priming treatments. Maximum emergence was observed in seeds primed with 40 and 60 mM KNO3 solutions (75.1 and 73.0%, respectively), although this was not statistically different to priming with 20 mM NaCl solution (72.6%).
