The effect of priming on emergence and biochemical changes of tomato seeds under suboptimal temperatures
In this research effect of priming followed by drying was investigated as a means of improving of vigour seedling emergence of two tomato cultivars (Cherry and Falcato) under four different constant temperatures (10, 15, 20 and 25°C). Priming was accomplished by soaking seeds in
a polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) solution (osmopriming) and in moist vermiculite (hydration) for 24 h at 25°C. Both priming treatments improved emergence mean, mean emergence time (MET) and emergence coefficient (EC), especially under suboptimal temperatures. The observed improvements
were attributed to priming-induced quantitative changes in soluble protein and phosphorus content of the seeds and improved membrane integrity.
