The suggested accelerated ageing (AA) test method for canola (Brassica napus L.) of 41°C for 72h has produced results for kale (B. oleracea L. var. acephala DC) which rated all seed lots as low vigour. The effects of combinations of time and temperature for AA testing of the latter species were therefore investigated. An ageing temperature of 42°C was too severe irrespective of ageing time, while ageing temperatures of 40°C and 41°C produced similar results. Ageing times of 48h and 72h both clearly separated seed lots at 41°C, although the former provided a greater range of vigour results. When kale seed lots were AA tested at 41°C for 48h, seed moisture content after ageing (30 to 34%) did not differ among seed lots, and replicate germination data after AA were all within tolerance.
