The PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata is the de-facto standard that specifies the metadata needed to preserve digital objects for the long term. Originally issued as version 1 in 2005, a new version 3.0 was issued in June 2015, which includes changes to the PREMIS Data Model that had been in place since the first version. Major changes are the ability to better describe software and hardware environments as well as Intellectual Entities. These changes are reviewed, highlighting the benefits of the enhancements in version 3. The presentation will include a discussion about how the changes might affect preservation systems and processes and issues concerning upgrading from version 2 to version 3.
