Open Access Boudjedra's Clinic: Colonial Madness in the Francophone Maghreb

Download Article:
This essay enters the scene of the psychiatric clinic and its relationship to a violent history of deculturation in French colonial Algeria through Rachid Boudjedra's 1969 novel La Répudiation. I argue that La Répudiation offers a means of critiquing recent appropriations of psychoanalysis in postcolonial critique through its ironic instantiation of a wounded symbolic order that haunts the postcolonial sovereign state.
