With reference to work by Cendrars, Severini and Apollinaire, this article explores early twentieth-century avant-garde responses to changing conceptualizations of Space and Time (precipitated largely by advances in communication technology), focusing particularly on the aesthetic engagement with the idea of simultaneity. The centrality of the Eiffel Tower as a signature symbol for these artists is reconsidered in light of other possible influences, such as the Paris metro, in terms of the interplay between form and symbol in representations of simultaneity's perceived effects.
