Open Access Addressing a Public in the Seventeenth Century

This article explores instances of early modern textual addresses to, or representations of, the entity of the public in a corpus of little-studied paratexts, dictionaries and pamphlet literature as well as better-known court productions. Despite variations in focus, the public was conceived of as an essentially limited body, and its shared values were considerably removed from later conceptions of opinion publique.
