Heim Movies: The Return of the Cyborg Double in The Ring Franchise
Accepting The Ring as uncanny necessitates an interdisciplinary approach to its reading. Where this essay will differ from previous criticism is in its refusal to stand on either side of the anthropological/psychoanalytic divide that has heretofore dominated the discourse regarding both the Japanese and American films. Instead, I have chosen to read Sadako and Samara's story as that about an avenging, repressed cyborg who, unlike the liberated Harawayan heroines of Ghost in the Shell or other Japanese cultural products, does not revel in her non-binarist nature but navigates the diaspora wrathfully. Her seemingly-endless uncanny return is made possible only through her union with technology
