Abstract

This article examines films made in Sri Lanka in Sinhalese. Sri Lankan cinema has made steady progress, despite the formidable economic and political challenges it has had to contend with, and the ferocity of the ethnic conflict that has engulfed the country during the past 25 years. The objective of this essay is to focus on the first decade of Sri Lankan cinema and examine its salience in terms of the interaction between filmic discourse and cultural formations.
