Keeping the beat: how controlled vocabularies affect indexing
This article, drawn from a presentation at the 2018 ASI conference, discusses the ways the structure of a controlled vocabulary influences the efficacy of database indexing and cataloging. The position is taken that the controlled vocabulary is one component in a complex system. The scope of discussion is narrowed to considering a closed system (research databases) and an open system (library catalogs). The author asserts that the controlled vocabulary is the component which keeps the system coherent and effective by enabling the end-user tasks of discovery, evaluation and selection of content items.
