Two of Gregory Bateson's key ideas, systemic flexibility and framing, are woven together to provide a vehicle for exploring the interplay of learning and play at a science center. Questions of content and relationship aspects of frames, and the importance of mutability of frames are developed. Against a backdrop of balancing stability and change, systemic processes for exercising frame flexibility are offered. These serve to both offer implications for the importance of designing for engagement, as well as extending Bateson's ideas of frame and flexibility that served as the starting points.
