Hemp is an old economic plant with many different uses. Today Cannabis is regarded a monotypic genus with C. sativa as the only species. However, taxonomy of Cannabis is still a matter of debate. Hemp is synthesizing cannabinoids with the two main cannabinoids Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, psychoactive) and cannabidiol (CBD, not psychoactive) which are important to classify plants into THC types, CBD types, and intermediary types. The content of cannabinoids is based on the genotype as well as environmental influences.

Der Hanf ist eine alte Kulturart, die für unterschiedliche Zwecke genutzt wird. Cannabis sativa wird heute als einzige Art der Gattung Cannabis betrachtet, obwohl diese Gliederung nach wie vor unter Taxonomen intensiv diskutiert wird.
