(Edited by Michael Hopkins.) This chapter aims to provide an overview of corporate social responsibility (CSR) best practices in the oil and gas sector with particular attention to CSR in newly emerging oil and gas economies. Because of the large footprint that oil and gas companies
have in developing countries, CSR activities by hydrocarbon companies - and the governments that oversee them - provide useful insights into the range of issues that can impact effective CSR policies and programmes, regardless of the industry or sector The focus of this chapter is on the upstream
oil sector, although many of the principles and concepts discussed here would equally apply to the downstream oil sector as well.
