The only way you'll really get your head round the complexities in India is to experience it for yourself. But as well, or instead, I suggest a look at:

Culture Shock India! A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette, by Gitanjali Kolanad (Marshall Cavendish Editions, 2009): overview includes religions, economy, languages, natural areas, then focus on characteristics of Indians, fitting in as a newcomer, practicalities of living/operating there as individual, food and entertaining, language and communicating, and section on doing business. ‘This book is meant to open doors, break down barriers, clear the way. India then remains for each reader to discover.’

Doing Business in India (Ernst & Young, 2012): a guide aiming to help international companies understand the complex decision-making process involved in undertaking foreign operations. It outlines key industry sectors in India, recent developments in each of the sectors and the industry outlook:$FILE/DBI_2012.pdf

Doing Business 2013: Economy Profile India (World Bank and International Finance Corporation, 2013): an annual report providing a country overview of business regulations in India, from the perspective of a small-scale entrepreneur. The processes involved in various business procedures are covered including dealing with construction permits, registering property, sourcing electricity, getting credit, trading across state boundaries and enforcing contracts. More analysis than practical guide, but important potential challenges are clearly outlined.
