Compact Representation of Reflections from Soft Surfaces

For low frequency or outdoor sound propagation, the commonly used sound field simulation methods based on geometrical acoustics are not applicable. Instead, finite element based methods or methods based on direct application of the wave equation must be applied. In this paper a simplified virtual source model for the specific case of outdoor sound propagation over a locally reacting absorbing ground, which is valid over an extended region, is presented. The method is based on dividing the reproduction area into sub-regions, and adapting two virtual sources to the reference sound field within each region. Due to a strong dipole characteristic for the virtual sources, low-error reproduction can be obtained within a horizontal region of about one octave, using only two monopole virtual sources. By using weighted averaging for results calculated for neighboring sub-regions, nearly error-free reproduction can be obtained over a large source-receiver range. The representation format can easily be combined with sound field representations calculated using other simulation methods, and should have applicability for auralization tasks simulating outdoor sound propagation, where low complexity and fast updates for dynamic scenes is of interest.
