Emission of Noise at Home by Vibrating Slabs and Walls: A New Criterion to Evaluate Ambient Vibration

Many complaints of vibrations at home, usually originated in nearby underground railway traffic or air conditioning equipment, are seen to be an acoustic problem, as noise is generated by the vibration of slabs and walls. The traditional comfort criteria for sound and vibration at home are usually set in independent standards and regulations, as if sound and vibration were quite independent phenomena. If it is agreed that complaints mean discomfort, then sound and vibration levels acceptance limits have to be improved, namely, traditional vibration discomfort criteria have to be completed with an "acoustic" vibration acceptance limit, to ensure that no significant noise is heard at home above the ambient (undisturbed) noise. In the case studies, the obtained experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions. Vibrations and sound were measured and analysed by standards methods, vibrations being reported in peak and r.m.s. velocities and in 1/3 octave band spectra, and sound in A weighted level, LAeq . Based on the work done, it is suggested, for regular rooms at homes, a standard acceptance limit of 0.03 mm/s for the r.m.s. velocity, normal to a vibrating slab or wall, measured at mid span, value computed only for the 1/3 octave frequency bands of 63 Hz, and above.
