Broadband Sonar with a Cylindrical Antenna
As the spectrum of signals in plane antenna sonars becomes wider, the effect is a growing width of the beams deflected, if the beamformer compensates phases on the spectrum's mid frequency only. The article presents the results of calculations designed to establish whether a similar effect occurs in broadband sonars with a cylindrical antennas. Transmitting antennas with wide beams and receiving antennas with narrow beams were used for this purpose. It was proved that cylindrical antenna sonars do not need broadband digital beamformers, which require much more powerful computers than narrow band beamformers.
