Input Parameters for the Prediction of Acoustical Properties of Open Porous Asphalt
The use of open porous asphalt (OPA) as a quiet road surface demands the prediction of acoustical properties of the road surface prior to construction. Here, a contribution for such a prediction is made. In order to characterise the OPA as a porous material, the porosity, the tortuosity and the flow resistivity are identified as the most important input parameters. Models are proposed to predict each of these parameters from the relevant technological parameters of the road material. The influence of grain size distribution and shape as well as asphalt mixture parameters are of primarily concern. The prediction from the proposed model relations are compared to measured results from a large pool of porous asphalt samples.
