Open Access Environmental Sounds for Psychoacoustic Testing

Download Article:
A selection of 25 everyday sounds is compiled from a survey on sound properties. Only those sounds are selected, which were named characteristic for certain sound properties. The broad spectrum of sounds ranging from natural environment to industrial noise was digitally recorded using an artificial head. From the sounds intensity parameters as well as several psychoacoustic descriptors are calculated. The descriptors reflect the variety of sound with impulsive to stationary and tonal to noisy character. Environment, recording condition, sound impression, intensity parameters and psychoacoustic descriptors are listed for each recording. The sounds can be used as prototypes for comparison of auditory modeling techniques and for psychoacoustic testing, i.e. listening tests or hearing aid adaption.
