Mel Cepstrum Parameterization and Classification of Opera Singers' Voices

A mel-cepstral parametrization method has been used to analyze the voices of 14 professional singers from five different vocal categories. The goal was to link the spectral properties of each voice to its respective vocal category. It was found that the main spectral differences amongst singers can be accounted for by a two-dimensional space where the discrimination between male and female voices takes place along the first axis and the discrimination among intra-gender vocal categories takes place along the second axis. The spectral characteristics associated with the two axes suggest that both types of discrimination are related to the formant structure of the spectra and are therefore of articulatory nature.
