A Study of Mixed Alkali Effect in Ternary Mixtures of Sodium and Potassium Thiocyanates in Aqueous Medium

Ultrasonic velocity (u), density (ρ) and viscosity (η) of [xNaSCN + (1 − x)KSCN] + RH2O (R = 4 to 7) systems were measured as functions of composition (x), water-to-salt ratio (R) and temperature. Some of the relevant derived parameters like adiabatic compressibility (βs ), excess adiabatic compressibility (βs E ) and molar sound velocity (R′) were computed. It was noteworthy that they showed additive behaviour. On the other hand, the viscosities of mixtures were found to show deviation from the additive behaviour unlike those of u, βs and R′. The cause of deviation from ideal or almost ideal behaviour has been ascribed to change in an overall average ion-ion interaction caused by the presence of solvated Na+ and K+ ions, apparently responsible for the mixed-alkali effects (MAE).
