The sea noise has been schematised by using a white noise and a filter whose spectrum has a slope of −17 log ( is the frequency expressed in Hz). "Signals" have been generated in the same manner by using slopes ranging from −18 log to −20 log , etc., and we have measured the detection threshold of characteristic noises of different devices of a submarine in the presence of the synthesized ambiant noise. We have measured the detection rate of these signals presented alone, or at random during the same test.

On a schématisé le bruit de mer ambiant en transformant un bruit blanc par un filtre dont la fonction de transfert présente une pente en −17 log f (f étant la fréquence en Hz). Après avoir réalisé suivant le même modèle des "signaux" dont le spectre présente une pente comprise entre −18 log f et −30 log f, on a étudié la détection de ces signaux dans le bruit ambiant. On a ensuite mesuré le seuil de détection des bruits caractéristiques des divers éléments d'un sous-marin en présence d'un bruit de mer synthétique. On a également mesuré le pourcentage de détection des différents signaux présentés soit isolément, soit au hasard au cours d'un même test.
