Concerning the assessment of sounds, manufacturers and customers go different ways at present. While the engineers of the manufacturer generally consider physical criteria for sound analysis, the customer judges the sound with his subjective sense of hearing. Therefore, of the same sound widely differing assessments can result. In this paper three case studies are presented which show the necessity for the application of psychoacoustic findings in sound quality design and product development.

The examples deal with the improvement of the interior sound of cars. The improvement of a door seal of a car, design criteria for active noise control inside a small truck, and psychoacoustic attributes of lighting switches are investigated. It is shown which hearing sensations are related to the problem and how they contribute to the subjective evaluation. In some examples the results of a psychoacoustic analysis are compared with traditional weighted levels.
