Stochastic Response Analysis of a Sound Level Meter Taking into Account a Change in Dimension in Shannon's Signal Space

This paper discusses how the probability distribution of the power fluctuation of an arbitrary non-Gaussian signal is affected by a change in dimension (2 WT, with W: frequency bandwidth; T: duration of a signal) in Shannon's signal space. Specifically, the probability distribution of the mean squared output of a sound level meter in the slow mode, with dimension 2 WT (T = 1 (s)) is predicted from that in the fast mode; with dimension 2 WT 0(To = 0.125 (s)). The effectiveness of the theory has been verified by application to actual road traffic noise data. The experimental results appear to have provided substantial proofs for its practical use.

Zusammenfassung

In dieser Arbeit wird diskutiert, wie die Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung der Leistungsschwankungen eines beliebigen, nicht Gaußschen Signals durch einen Wechsel der Dimension (2 WT mit W FrequenzbandbreiteT Dauer des Signals) im Shannon'schen Signalraum beeinflußt wird. Insbesondere wird die Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung der quadratisch gemittelten Ausgangsgröße eines Schallpegelmessers in der Stellung “slow” mit der Dimension 2 WT (T= 1 s) aus der in der Stellung “fast” mit der Dimension 2WT 0 (T 0 = 0,125s) vorhergesagt. Die Leistungsfähigkeit der Theorie wurde durch Anwendung auf reale Verkehrslärmdaten verifiziert. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse liefern einen wesentlichen Nachweis für ihre praktische Brauchbarkeit.

Cet article est consacré à un examen de 1'influence d'un changement de dimension de l'espace signal de Shannon 2 WT (oü W est la largeur spectrale et T la durée du signal) sur la forme de la distribution de probabilité des variations de puissance d'un signal non gaussien quelconque. Concrètement, on calcule la distribution de probabilité de la sortie quadratique moyenne d'un sonomètre en mode lent avec la dimension 2 WT(T= 1 (s)) à partir de celle correspondant à un mode rapide avec la dimension 2 WT 0 (T 0 = 0.125 (s)). Une application à des données de bruit de circulation routière réelle a permis de vérifier la validité de la théorie. Les résultats expérimentaux apportent assez nettement la preuve de son utilité pratique.
