Individual Subjective Diffuseness Responses of Filtered Noise Sound Fields

This paper describes individual differences in the subjective diffuseness judgments of sound fields. The scale value of subjective diffuseness of individuals is described by a power law of the form: S = −αXβ. where X is the interaural cross-correlation, and α and β are obtained as characteristics for each individual.

This paper also reconfirms the most effective horizontal reflection angles for stimulating subjective diffuseness at the individual level. Results of paired-comparison tests, judging which of two sound fields was the more diffuse, show that for all subjects the most effective horizontal angle decreases with the increasing frequency of a one-thirdoctavc hand noise source.

Zusammenfassung

Diese Arbeit beschreibt individuelle Unterschiede in der subjektiven Beurteilung der Diffusität von Schallfeldern. Der Skalenwert der subjektiven Diffusität von Versuchspersonen wird durch ein Potenzgesetz der Form S = − αXβ beschrieben, wobei X die interaurale Kreuzkorrelation und α sowie βfur die einzelnen Personen charakteristisch sind.

Des weiteren bestätigt diese Arbeit für Einzelpersonen die im Sinne der subjektiven Diffusität wirksamsten horizontalen Reflexionswinkel. Aus Paarvergleichen, bei denen beurteilt wird, welches von zwei Schallfeldern diffuser wirkt, ergibt sich, daß für alle Versuchspersonen der wirksamste Horizontalwinkel mit wachsender Frequenz des terzbandbreiten Rauschens abnimmt.

Cet article étudie les variabilités individuelles des jugements portés sur la diffusion subjective de champs acoustiques. La distribution des jugements peut être représentée par une fonction puissance de la forme: S = −αX β, ou X est la correlation interaurale et α et β des caractéristiques individuelles.

Cette étude confirme également, à l'échelle de l'individu, les angles horizontaux de réflexion qui sont prépondérants pour la création de lä sensation de diffusion du champ. Les résultats de tests de comparaison par paires, oü I'on doit indiquer lequel de deux champs paraît le plus diffus, montrent que pour tous les sujets l'angle horizontal prépondérant décroît lorsqu'augmente la fréquence pour des bandes de bruit d'un tiers d'octave.
