Studies on the Sound Power Estimation of a Noise Source using the Two-Microphone Sound Intensity Technique

Working groups have been established by international and national bodies to develop suitable standards for measuring the sound power of noise sources using the sound intensity technique. During sound power estimation of a noise source using the sound intensity technique “to scan or not to scan” is an important question. An attempt is made here to show through careful experiments, the advantages and disadvantages of the fixed point and scanning sound power measurement techniques. It has been shown that increasing the number of measurement points on the enclosing surface improves the estimated sound power level, and that the most accurate results are obtained if continuous scanning is used. Another important aspect of sound power measurements which is considered in this paper is the effect of background noise on the estimated sound power level of the source.

Zusammenfassung

Von nationalen und internationalen Körperschaften wurden Arbeitsgruppen mit dem Ziel eingerichtet, geeignete Standards für die Messungen der Schalleistung von Geräuschquellen mittels der Schallintensitatstechnik zu entwickeln. Bei der Schätzung der Schalleistung einer Geräuschquelle mit der Schallintensitätstechnik lautet eine wichtige Frage “to scan or not to scan”. Durch sorgfältige Experimente wird versucht, die Vor- und Nachteile von Festpunkt- und von Abtastmessungen aufzuzeigen. Es wurde gezeigt, daß die Erhöhung der Zahl der Meßpunkte auf die Hüllfläche die Schätzung des Schalleistungspegels verbessert und daß die genausten Ergebnisse mit einer kontinuierlichen Abtastung erzielt wurden. Als anderer wichtiger Aspekt von Schalleistungsmessungen wird in dieser Arbeit der Einfluß von Hintergrundgeräuschen auf das Schätzergebnis betrachtet.

Des organismes nationaux et internationaux ont mis en place des groupes de travail pour l'établissement de normes adaptées à la mesure de la puissance acoustique de sources de bruit à partir d'une technique d'intensimétrie. Lors de la mesure de cette puissance, il est important de savoir si l'on doit ou non utiliser un balayage. Grâce à des expériences soignées, nous tentons de montrer les avantages et les inconvénients des techniques de mesure de puissance en point fixe et à balayage. On a démontré qu'en augmentant le nombre de points de mesures sur la surface entourant la source on améliore l'estimation du niveau de puissance, et que le résultat le plus précis s'obtient par un balayage continu. L'autre point important développé dans cet article, concernant les measures de puissance acoustique, est l'effet d'un bruit de fond sur l'estimation du niveau de puissance de la source.
