Relation between Objective Criteria and Subjective Factors in a Sound Field, Determined by Multivariate Analyses

This paper deals with a new system to evaluate sound fields systematically, from the standpoint of both objective criteria and subjective factors. Seven objective criteria, which include the directional characteristics of early reflected sounds, are extracted from echo-diagrams by utilizing a one-dimensional array microphone specifically designed for the measurements. These objective criteria are used as the fundamental data for multivariate analyses. The dissimilarity data of hearing impression between different seats are processed by multi-dimensional scaling. The result shows that three objective criteria – the reverberation time, the lateral component and the front-to-back ratio of the early reflected sound energy – are the most important for evaluating differences of the sound field. Factor analysis also made clear that more than 80 percent of the total variance comes from, at most, three latent factors which correspond closely to these three objective criteria.

Zusammenfassung

Diese Arbeit behandelt ein neues System zur systematischen Auswertung von Schallfeldern vom Standpunkt sowohl der objektiven Kriterien als auch subjektiver Faktoren. Mit Hilfe eines speziell für diese Messungen gebauten eindimensionalen Mikrophon-Arrays warden aus Echodiagrammen sieben objektive Kriterien, einschließlich der Richtungsverteilung von frühem reflektierten Schall ermittelt. Diese objektiven Kriterien warden als Ausgangsmaterial für multivariate Analysen benutzt. Die Unterschiedlichkeit der Höreindriicke an verschiedenen Sitzen wird durch eine multidimensionale Skalierung ausgewertet. Das Ergebnis zeigt, daß drei objektive Kriterien – die Nachhallzeit, die seitliche Komponente, das Vorn-Hinten Verhältnis der frühen reflektierten Schallenergie – für die Charakterisierung der unterschiedlichen Schallfelder am wichtigsten sind. Aus der Faktorenanalyse geht weiterhin hervor, daß mehr als 80% der gesamten Varianz im wesentlichen von drei Faktoren herrührt, welche hoch mit diesen drei objektiven Kriterien korrelieren.

On propose un système nouveau d'évaluation systématique des champs acoustiques, afin de tenir compte simultanément des critères objectifs et des facteurs subjectifs. On part d'echogrammes enregistrés au moyen d'un réseau unidimensionnel de microphones spécialement réalisé pour ces mesures et on en extrait sept critères objectifs incluant les caractéristiques directionnelles des sons précocement réfléchis. Ces critères objectifs servent de données fondamentales pour alimenter les analyses multifactorielles. Les données relatives à la différence des impressions auditives selon la place occupée par le sujet sont traitées au moyen de modifications multidimensionnelles d'échelle.

On a trouvé que trois critères objectifs jouent le rôle le plus important dans 1'évaluation des variations du champ acoustique: la durée de réverbération, la composante latérale de la fraction précocement réfléchie de l'énergie et le rapport avant/arrière de la même énergie. L'analyse factorielle montre également que plus de 80% de la variance totale provient, au maximum, de trois facteurs latents étroitement reliés à ces trois critères objectifs.
