Model Investigations into Sound Fields in Reverberation Rooms

The different behaviour of five differently-shaped reverberation rooms in measurements of the sound absorption coefficient is investigated theoretically using the ray tracing method. The measurements are performed in the frequency range in which the effect of sound scattering elements in the rooms is insignificant. The statistics of the rays' incidence angles at the surfaces of absorber specimens, in conjunction with the angular dependence of the absorption coefficients of these specimens, allow the rooms to be quantitatively compared with one another. For a certain room/sample combination, the theoretical values can also be compared with measurement results already available. This comparison shows good agreement of the results. The measurements of the absorption coefficient did not reveal a fundamental superiority of obliqueangled rooms over “rectangular rooms” i.e. rooms having the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped.

Zusammenfassung

Das unterschiedliche Verhalten von fünf Hallräumen ver-schiedener Form bei Messungen des Schallabsorptionsgrades wird theoretisch mit der Strahlverfolgungs-Methode untersucht, und zwar für den Frequenzbereich, in dem schallstreuende Vorrichtungen in den Räumen nicht wesentlich wirksam sind. Die Statistik der Strahl-Ein-fallswinkel an der Oberflache von Absorberproben im Zusammenhang mit der Winkelabhängigkeit des Absorptionsgrades dieser Proben erlaubt quantitative Vergleiche der Räume untereinander. Fur eine bestimmte Raum- und Proben-Kombination können die theoretischen Werte auch mit vorliegenden Meßergebnissen verglichen werden. Dabei zeigt sich gute Übereinstimmung. Eine grundsätzliche Überlegenheit schiefwinkeliger Räume gegenüber quaderförmigen Räumen bei Absorptionsgrad-messungen wurde nicht gefunden.

On effectue un examen théorique de la différence des comportements de cinq chambres de réverbération de formes diverses à partir de mesures du degré d'absorption acoustique et des principes de la méthode de poursuite des rayons, en se plaçant dans un domaine de fréquences dans lequel les installations diffusantes placées dans les salles restent pratiquement inopérantes. La statistique des angles d'incidence des rayons sur la surface des sondes absorbantes en relation avec la dépendance angulaire du degré d'absorption de ces sondes permet d'établir des comparaisons quantitatives des salles considérées. Pour une combinaison donnée sallesonde, on peut aussi comparer les valeurs théoriques aux résultats expérimentaux disponibles. On constate une bonne concordance. Mais on n'a trouvé aucune supériorité fondamentale des salles à parois obliques sur celles à parois rectangulaires, du moins pour les mesures du degré d'absorption.
