The Application of Ultrasound in the Preparation of Sludge for its Mechanical De-watering

Investigations were carried out concerning the extent of the influence of an ultrasonic field on the prepara-tion of sludge for its de- watering by means of mechan-ical devices. These investigations were carried out on the laboratory scale on actual sludge, and also on a partly industrial scale. The processes taking place in sludge due to the influence of the ultrasonic field have been determined by the generally known method of determining the hydration of the sludge, the specific resistance of filtration as well as the filtration rate and capacity. The obtained positive results confirm the appliability of ultrasonic waves in the preparation of sludge, indicating at the same time the expedience of taking up such investigations concerning the applica-tion of ultrasonic fields for the purpose of sludge prep-aration and treatment.


Es wurden Untersuchungen über den Einfluß eines Ultraschallfeldes auf die Aufbereitung von Schlämmen zur Entwässerung mittels mechanischer Anlagen durch-geführt. Diese Untersuchungen an realen Schlämmen wurden im Laboratoriumsmaßstab, teilweise aber auch in industriellem Meßstab durchgeführt. Die im Schlamm unter dem Einfluß des Ultraschalls stattfindenden Vor-gänge wurden mit allgemein bekannten Methoden, näm-lich der Bestimmung des Wassergehalts, des spezifischen Widerstands sowie der Geschwindigkeit und Ergiebig-keit der Filtration bestimmt. Die erhaltenen positiven Ergebnisse bestätigen die Brauchbarkeit von Ultraschall bei der Aufbereitung von Schlämmen und zeigen zugleich die Notwendigkeit von weiteren Untersuchungen über die Anwendung von Ultraschall auf die Aufbereitung und Behandlung von Schlamm.


On étudie l'action preliminaire d'un champ ultrasonore intense sur les boues destinées à la déshydratation par des moyens mécaniques. Les essais ont été effectuès a l'échelle du laboratoire et partiellement à une échelle semi-indu-strielle sur des boues réelles. Les processus développés dans les boues par l'action des ultrasons ont été détermi-nés par les moyens classiques de mesure du taux d'hydra-tation, de la résistance spécifique à la filtration, du taux et de la capacité de filtration. Les résultats ont été positifs et confirment l'intérêt pratique des ondes ultrasonores dans le traitement préliminaire des boues. Ils légitiment l'entreprise de telles recherches et leur continuation.
