Bulk heterogeneous wave propagation in a nonabsorbing medium is demonstrated experimentally. This wave is generated by means of a wedge made in an absorbing material and immersed in water. To control the heterogeneous wave structure, the ultrasonic field is scanned through the zone where the plane wave hypothesis is verified. Theoretical and experimental results fit very well and show that these waves do not only exist in the neighbourhood of interfaces, but may also be propagated in an infinite medium.

Zusammenfassung

Es werden ebene, heterogene Volumenwellen in einer nichtabsorbierenden Flüssigkeit experimentell nachgewiesen. Diese Wellen entstehen bei der Durchquerung eines Prismas aus absorbierendem Material. Zur Beobachtung der heterogenen Wellenstruktur wird das Ultraschallfeld in einem Bereich abgetastet, wo die Annahme einer ebenen Welle zutrifft. Die gute Übereinstimmung zwischen der Theorie und dem Experiment zeigt, daß diese Wellen nicht ausschließlich an Grenzflächen existieren, sondern auch im Inneren der Flüssigkeit.

L'onde plane hétérogène de volume a été mise en évidence expérimentalement dans un milieu liquide non absorbant. Cette onde vient de la traversée d'un prisme constitué d'un matériau absorbant. On a vérifié la structure hétérogène de l'onde à l'aide d'un dispositif expérimental qui explore le champ ultrasonore dans la zone spatiale où les hypothèses d'onde plane sont valables. Une bonne concordance entre la théorie et l'expérience a montré que ces ondes n'existent pas exclusivement aux interfaces, mais également au sein même du liquide.
