Phase Transition Studies in 70.8 and 80.8 Benzylidene Liquid Crystals

The density and ultrasonic velocity studies in N(P-N-heptyloxy benzylidene) P-N-octyl aniline 70·8 and N(P-N-octyloxy benzylidene) P-N-octy1 aniline 80·8 in their mesomorphic phases are presented. 70·8 exhibits smectic A, smectic C, smectic B and smectic G phases while 80·8 exhibits smectic A, smectic B and smectic G phases. Phase transition studies carried out across the isotropic-smectic A, smectic A-smectic C, smectic C-smectic B and smectic A-smectic B phases are presented. An estimate of pressure dependence of transition temperature across isotropicsmectic A phase transformation is shown. The adiabatic compressibility, molar sound velocity and molar compressibility are computed.

Zusammenfassung

Es werden Untersuchungen der Dichte und Ultraschall-Geschwindigkeit von N(P-N-Heptyloxybenzyliden) P-N-Oktylanilin 70,8 und N(P-N-Oktyloxybenzyliden) P-N-Oktylanilin 80,8 in ihrer mesomorphen Phase vorgestellt. 70,8 weist die smektische A-, C-, B- und G-Phase auf, während 80,8 die smektische A-, B- und G-Phase zeigt Es wird über Untersuchungen des Phasenübergangs isotrop-smektisch A, smektisch A-smektisch C, smektisch C-smektisch B und smektisch A-smektisch B berichtet. Weiterhin wird eine Abschätzung der Druckabhängigkeit der Übergangstemperatur für die isotrop-smektisch A-Phasenumwandlung angegeben. Des weiteren werden die adiabatische Kompressibilität, die molare Schallgeschwindigkeit und die molare Kompressibilität berechnet.

On présente des mesures de densité et de vitesse des ultrasons dans les phases mésomorphes de l'aniline 70·8 (N(P-N-heptyloxybenzylidène)P-N-octyle) et de l'aniline 80·8 (N(P-N-octyloxybenzylidène)P-N-octyle). L'aniline 70·8 possède les phases smectiques A, C, B et G, tandis que l'aniline 80·8 n'a que les phases smectiques A, B et G. Les transitions de phases étudiées sont: isotrope-smectique A, smectique A — smectique C, smectique C — smectique B, et smectique A - smectique B. Une estimation de Pinfluence de la pression sur la température de transition a été obtenue pour la transformation de phase isotrope — smectique A. On a aussi calculé la compressibilité adiabatique, la vitesse acoustique molaire et la compressibilité molaire.
