The Modulation Transfer Function of Music Signals and its Applications to Reverberation Measurement

Using the impulse response of a reverberation process, a general theory of the transmission of the envelope, or “Modulation”, of any signal is derived. In a most classical way, this model introduces a transfer function, called “Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)”.

This model is tested with several signals, including music, for different reverberation fields. Experimental results show a good agreement with theory, and allow an adequate estimation of the reverberation time.

The same experiments give evidences of some statistical aspects of music, which are applied to the determination of the reverberation time.

Ausgehend von der Impulsantwort eines Übertragungssystems wird eine allgemeine Theorie für die Übertragung der Einhüllenden (,,Modulation”) eines Signals abgeleitet. Durch vereinfachende Annahmen kann eine lineare Übertragungsfunktion für die Signaleinhüllenden, die ,,Modulationsübertragungsfunktion” (MTF), eingeführt werden.

Diese Modellvorstellungen werden für Nachhallschallfelder und für verschiedene Anregungssignale, darunter auch Musik, experimentell untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine gute Übereinstimmung mit der Theorie, und sie ermöglichen eine Abschätzung der Nachhallzeit.

Bei den Untersuchungen zeigen sich auch einige statistische Aspekte von Musiksignalen, die zur Bestimmung der Nachhallzeit herangezogen werden können.

A partir de la réponse impulsionnelle d'un processus de réverbération, il est possible de développer une théorie générale de la transmission de l'enveloppe, ou «modulation», d'un signal quelconque. Ce modèle introduit de manière classique une fonction de transfert, que l'on appelle «fonction de transfert de la modulation (MTF)».

Ce modèle est testé avec un certain nombre de signaux, y compris de la musique, pour divers champs de réverbération. Les résultats expérimentaux s'avèrent en bon accord aved la théorie, et permettent de calculer le temps de réverbération avec une approximation suffisante.

Ces mêmes expériences mettent en évidence certains aspects statistiques de la musique, qui sont appliqués à la détermination du temps de réverbération.
