Lamb Wave Analysis through Light Polarization Discrimination Techniques

The excitation and propagation of Lamb waves in a transparent glass plate is briefly analysed and an optical probing technique is presented, that permits an investigation of the acoustic field patterns produced by different modes. The optical detection is based on a polarization discrimination technique and the visualization of the transverse distribution of both shear strain 8ß and strain combination S 2S1 is performed. Symmetrical and antisymmetrical Lamb modes have been thereby characterized. A few light intensity profiles are shown and compared with the expected strain structures.


Die Anregung und Ausbreitung von Lambwellen in einer transparenten Glasplatte wird kurz analysiert. Ein optisches Nachweisverfahren wird vorgestellt, welches eine Untersuchung der durch verschiedene Moden erzeugten akustischen Feldgrößen gestattet. Der optische Nachweis basiert auf einem Polarisationsmeßverfahren. Das Sichtbarmachen der transversalen Verteilung der Schubverformung Sq und der Dehnungskombination S 2S1 wird vorgeführt. Symmetrische und antisymmetrische Lambwellentypen wurden auf diese Weise charakterisiert. Einige Lichtintensitätsprofile werden dargestellt und mit den erwarteten Dehnungsverteilungen verglichen.


Après une brève étude de l'excitation et de la propagation des ondes de Lamb dans une plaque de verre transparent, on présente une technique de sondage optique qui permet l'investigation des configurations des champs acoustiques correspondant aux différents modes susceptibles de se propager. La détection optique est basée sur une technique de discrimination des polarisations. On a obtenu ainsi la visualisation de la distribution transversale des tensions de cisaillement S6 et des combinaisons de tensions S 2S1 , ce qui aboutit à la caractérisation des modes de Lamb symétriques et antisymétriques. On présente quelques profils d'intensité lumineuse et on les compare avec les diagrammes des tensions auxquelles ils devraient correspondre.
