The object of this study is to determine the vibratory behaviour of thin structures such as beams and plates, partially damped. The damping process which is utilised is of a three-layered structure, termed a “sandwich”. In combining the analytical solutions of the two neighbouring problems (a new beam and a treated beam in sandwich), the damping factor is obtained of the transverse vibrations of a partially treated beam. These results are compared with those which come from a series of experiments with plates and one clearly recognises the law of variation of the damping with the characteristics (dimensions, materials) of the sandwich as forecast by the one-dimensional simplified theory.

Le but de cette étude est de déterminer le comportement vibratoire de structures minces tellcs que poutres et plaques, partiellement amorties. Le procédé d'amortissement utilisé est celui des structures à trois couches, dites «sandwich». En raccordant les solutions analytiques des deux problèmes voisins (poutre nue et poutre traitée en sandwich), on obtient le facteur d'amortissement des vibrations transversales d'une poutre partiellement traitée. Ces résultats sont comparés à ceux qui découlent d'une série d'expériences exécutées sur des plaques et on retrouve bien la loi de variation de l'amortissement avec les caractéristiques du revêtement (dimensions, matériau), prévue par la théorie simplifiée à une dimension.

Zusammenfassung

Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist die Bestimmung des Schwingungsverhaltens dünner Strukturen wie Balken und Platten, die teilweise bedämpft sind. Die Art der angewandten Bedämpfung entspricht der dreischichtiger, als ,,Sandwich” bezeichneter Strukturen. Durch Anpassung der analytischen Lösungen zweier ähnlicher Probleme (nackter und sandwichartig behandelter Balken) erhält man den Dämpfungsfaktor eines teilweise behandelten Balkens für Transversal-schwingungen. Diese Resultate werden mit einer Reihe von Experimenten an Platten verglicheu. Dabei bestätigt sich recht gut das Gesetz der Dampfungsänderung mit den kennzeichnendra Daten des Belags (Abmessungen, Material), das mittels einer vereinfachten, eindimensionalon Theorie gefunden wurde.
