Compressional and Shear Viscous Processes in Solutions of Electrolytes in Glycerol. III. Investigation of Rheological Properties of Solutions of FeCl3 and Na2B4O7 in Glycerol by Ultrasonic Shear Strains

The mechanical shear impedance of solutions of borax and ferric chloride in glycerol was determined over the viscoelastic relaxation region by ultrasonic shear strains. The relaxation region of glycerol is markedly broadened by the electrolytes which indicates the formation of more sizable clusters in the solutions than those existing in pure glycerol. It was found that the shear behaviour of the borax solutions can be described satisfactorily by the Maxwell model assuming a continuous relaxation time spectrum symmetric on the logarithmic frequency scale as well as by the Barlow-Erginsav-Lamb model of supercooled liquids. The shear properties of the ferric chloride solutions indicate a significant asymmetry of the distribution of times which should be most probably attributed to the equilibrium between different ionic species.

Zusammenfassung

Die mechanische Schwingimpedanz von Lösungen von Na2B4O7 und FeCl3 in Glycerol wurde über den viskoelastischen Relaxationsbereich mit Hilfe von Ultraschall-Scherspannungen bestimmt. Der Relaxationsbereich von Glycerol ist durch die Elektrolyte merklich verbreitert, was die Bildung von Klumpen in der Lösung anzeigt, die größer sind, als die in reinem Glycerol vorhandenen. Es wurde festgestellt, daß das Echoverhalten der Boraxlösung zufriedenstellend durch das Maxwell-Modell beschrieben werden kann. und zwar unter der Annahme eines kontinuierlichen Relaxationszeitspektrums, welches auf der logarithmischen Frequenzskala symmetrisch ist, wie auch durch das Barlow-Erginsav-Lamb-Modell für unterkühlte Flüssigkeiten. Die Schergrößen der Eisenchloridlösung bewirken eine signifikante Asymmetrie der Verteilung der Zeiten, welche höchstwahrscheinlich von dem Gleichgewicht zwischen unterschiedlichen Ionensorten herrührt.

On a déterminé par une méthode ultrasonique l'impédance mécanique de cisaillement pour des solutions de borax et de chlorure ferrique dans le glycérol, aux alentours de la région de relaxation visco-élastique. Le domaine de relaxation du glycérol est considérablement élargi par les électrolytes, ce qui indique la formation d'agglomérats de molécules plus étendus dans les solutions que dans le glycérol pur. Le comportement du borax au cisaillement a pu être deci it d'une manière satisfaisante au moyen du modèle de Maxwell en supposant un spectre continu de temps de relaxation s'étendant symétriquement sur l'échelle logarithmique des fréquences. Le modèle de Barlow-Erginsav-Lamb des liquides surfondus convient également. Le comportement des solutions de chlorure ferrique manifeste une asymétrie significative de la distribution des temps de relaxation, ce qui peut raisonnablement être attribué a l'équilibre entre différent es espèces ioniques.
