A study is presented of the influence of the viscosity of a gas or fluid-like layer between two plates on the structure-borne sound in the plates. The analysis consists of determining the wavenumbers of the system. From this analysis the frequency response of the damping is found and the dependence of the losses on the thickness of the layer and on the mass-loading of the plates becomes evident. It is shown, that the damping grows inversely with the thickness of the layer, and that the case of optimum damping is reached for mass-loadings in a ratio of approximately 1 : 2.
