Research has been undertaken in vitro, in the range 10 to 40 kHz, on the removal of brain tumours with an acoustical device, having in view its later clinical application. The device consists of a composite transducer and a waveguide fixed in a protective tube. The tissue material placed at the wave guide tip is destroyed by acoustic irradiation and can be sucked-out through the waveguide cavity. The destruction rate of the brain and tumour tissue investigated lay between 0.04 and 1 g/s. Crucial to the foregoing is the infringement of a frequency-dependent limit of the lateral displacement.

Zusammenfassung

Es wurden Versuche in vitro zur Entfernung von Hirntumoren mit einem akustischen Instrument im Hinblick auf eine spätere klinische Anwendung im Bereich von 10 bis 40 kHz durchge- führt. Das Gerät besteht aus einem Verbundwandler und einem im Schutzschlauch geführten Wellenleiter. Die an der Wellenleiterspitze befindliche Gewebesubstanz wird durch Beschallung zerstört und kann durch den hohlen Wellenleiter abgesaugt werden. Die Zerstörungsrate des untersuchten Hirn- und Tumorgewebes lag zwischen 0,04 und 1 g/s. Entscheidend für den Vorgang ist das Überschreiten eines frequenzabhängigen Grenzwertes der Auslenkung.

En vue des applications cliniques ultérieures on a commencé par des essais in vitro. L'appareil acoustique se compose d'un transducteur du type compound dont la gaine de protection est prolongée par un guide d'onde. Un tissu organique placé à l'extrémité libre du guide d'onde est désorganisé par l'action des ondes acoustiques et peut ensuite être aspiré à travers le guide qui est creux. La vitesse de destruction des tissus cérébraux ou tumoraux se situe entre 0,04 et 1 g/s. Le fonctionnement du dispositif est conditionné par la nécessité de dépasser une certaine valsurlimite de la pénétration des ondes, valeur dépendant de la fréquence.
