Calibration of Ultrasonic Fields Using Optical Holography

Ultrasonic intensity measurements are carried out by evaluating the surface relief produced by the radiation pressure of a propagating sound wave striking the free liquid surface. The measuring method is based on optical holography. The surface profile is quantitatively determined by doubleexposure holography, whereas the surface tension effect is taken into consideration by means of shadow optical investigations of single-exposed holograms. The method used enables the absolute calibration of arbitrarily shaped sound fields.


Messungen der Ultraschallintensität werden durchgeführt, indem das von einer fortschreitenden Ultraschallwelle an der freien Flüssigkeitsoberfläche erzeugte Oberflächenrelief ausgewertet wird. Die Meßmethode basiert auf der optischen Holographie. Das Oberflächenprofil wird quantitativ bestimmt durch Doppelbelichtungsholographie; hingegen wird der Effekt der Oberflächenspannung durch schattenoptische Untersuchung einfachbelichteter Hologramme berücksichtigt. Die angewandte Methode ermöglicht die Absolutkalibrierung von Schallfeldern beliebiger Form.


L'intensité des ultrasons peut se mesurer en évaluant le relief de surface que produit la pression de radiation quand une onde sonore progressive frappe la surface libre d'un liquide. La méthode de mesure se base sur l'holographie optique. Le profil de la surface liquide se détermine quantitativement par holographie à double exposition, tandis que l'effet de tension superficielle est prise en considération grâce à des mesures d'ombres optiques sur des hologrammes à simple exposition Cette méthode permet la calibration absolue des champs ultrasonores de configuration quelconque.
