The timbre differences between complex tones, consisting of four, five and six of the first six harmonics of 100 Hz, were investigated by the method of triadic comparison. Insufficient correlation could be found between the measured dissimilarities in timbre on one hand and on the other the calculated differences in third-octave-spectra, cricital-band-loudness and sharpness of the tones. The results of a non-metric two-dimensional scaling procedure indicate that, in our case, the differences in timbre may be related to the different distributions of spectral lines in the tones used.


Die Klangfarbenunterschiede zwischen harmonischen Klängen, bestehend aus vier, fünf und sechs der ersten sechs Harmonischen von 100 Hz, wurden mit der Methode des Tripelvergleichs untersucht. Zwischen den beobachteten Klangfarbenunähnlichkeiten einerseits und den berechneten Unterschieden der Klänge in den Terzspektren, den Frequenzgruppenlautheiten und der Schärfe andererseits konnte keine hinreichende Korrelation festgestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse einer nonmetrischen zweidimensionalen Skalierung liefern einen Hinweis dafür, daß im vorliegenden Fall die Klangfarbenunterschiede auf die unterschiedlichen Spektrallinienverteilungen der Klänge zurückgeführt werden können.


On a examiné au moyen de la méthode des triples comparaisons les différences de timbre entre sons harmoniques constitués de quatre, cinq ou six des six premiers harmoniques de la fréquence 100 Hz. On a recherché les corrélations entre les dissimilitudes de timbre observées d'une part et les différences calculées d'après les spectres de tiers d'octave, les sonies des bandes critiques et l'acuité subjective des sons d'autre part, mais ces corrélations se sont révélées insuffisantes. Une analyse bidimensionnelle non métrique donne à entendre que dans le cas présent les différences de timbre peuvent être attribuées aux différences de distribution des raies spectrales des sons étudiés.
