Experimental Study of the Integrated Optical Effect of Ultrasonic Fields

In this experimental research the integrated optical effect produced by ultrasonic fields from circular and square transducers is studied by using the light diffraction technique. The measured axial sound field structure of the Raman-Nath parameter is compared with the results of a theoretical investigation by Ingenito and Cook [3].

It could be shown that suitable conditions provided a close correspondence between the predicted shape of the Raman-Nath parameter and the observed axial profile was verified. An accurate adjustment to thickness resonance frequency for air-backed transducers of the use of heavily mechanically loaded transducers as well as the knowledge of the effective transducer dimensions were required as basic conditions.

The results obtained render possible the application of the one-dimensional approach to transducer calibrations and related problems and a decrease of the measuring uncertainty of the acousto-optical techniques.

Zusammenfassung

In dieser experimentellen Untersuchung wird der von kreisförmigen und quadratischen Wandlern erzeugte integrale optische Effekt mit Hilfe der Technik der Lichtbeugung gemessen. Die Struktur des Raman-Nath-Parameters auf der Schallfeldachse wird mit den Ergebnissen einer theoretischen Untersuchung von Ingenito und Cook [3] verglichen.

Unter geeigneten Bedingungen konnte eine gute Übereinstimmung zwischen dem vorausgesagten Verlauf des Raman-Nath-Parameters und dem beobachteten Achsenprofil bestätigt werden. Notwendige Voraussetzung hierfür ist bei unbedämpften Wandlern eine genaue Abstimmung auf die Dickenresonanzfrequenz oder die Verwendung stark bedampfter Wandler. In beiden Fällen ist die Kenntnis der effektiven Wandlerabmessungen erforderlich.

Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse ermöglichen die Anwendung der eindimensionalen Näherungslösung zur Wandlerkalibrierung und verwandter Probleme und eine Verringerung der Meßungenauigkeit der akusto-optischen Techniken.

On étudie expérimentalement, par la technique de la diffraction de la lumière, l'effet optique global produit par des champs ultrasoniques émanant de transducteurs circulaires ou carrés. On a mesuré la dépendance du paramètre de Raman-Nath en fonction du champ acoustique axial et on l'a comparée aux prédictions théoriques obtenues par Ingenito et Cook [3].

Il a pu être montré que, sous des conditions convenables, on obtient une correspondance étroite entre le profil prédit pour le paramètre de Raman-Nath et le profil axial observé. Parmi les conditions exigées figurent notamment un ajustement rigoureux des transducteurs à face arrière libre sur la fréquence de la résonance d'épaisseur ou l'emploi de transducteurs à fort amortissement mécanique, ainsi que la connaissance des dimensions effectives des transducteurs.

Les résultats obtenus permettent d'appliquer la méthode unidimensionnelle à la calibration des transducteurs ou à des problèmes apparentés, ainsi que de réduire les erreurs de mesure dans les techniques acousto-optiques.
