The Effect of Range on the Ultrasonic Echo Acting on Circular and Rectangular Transceivers

It is shown that the average pressure, due to the presence of a small reflecting target, which is acting on circular and rectangular transceivers of equal emitting areas differ considerably in the near-field zone, while this difference is not remarkable in the far-field zone.

The comparison includes a circular, a square and two rectangular transceivers, all having the same emitting area. The treatment is made for transceivers having dimensions and resonance frequency which are lying within the applicable range of medical diagnosis. It is also shown that the position of the “final” maximum depends on — among others — the configuration of the transducer.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird gezeigt, daß die mittleren Drücke, die durch das Vorhandensein eines kleinen, reflektierenden Zielobjekts bei kreisförmigen und rechteckigen Wandlern gleicher Strahlungsfläche erzeugt werden, in der Nahfeldzone beträchtlich voneinander abweichen, während in der Fernfeldzone kein merklicher Unterschied auftritt.

Der Vergleich umfaßt einen kreisförmigen, einen quadratischen und zwei rechteckige Wandler, alle mit gleicher Strahlungsfläche. Die behandelten Wandler liegen bezüglich der Abmessungen und der Resonanzfrequenz im für die medizinische Diagnose anwendbaren Bereich. Ferner wird gezeigt, daß die Lage des ,,letzten“ Maximums unter anderem auch von der Gestaltung der Wandler abhängt.

On montre que la pression sonore moyenne provenant d'une pstite cible réflectrice produit des effets notablement différents dans la zone de champ proche, salon qu'elle agit sur des traducteurs circulaires ou rectangulaires, à surface emissive égale. Catte différence disparaît dans la zone de champ lointain. La comparaison a été effectuée pour un traducteur circulaire, un traducteur carré et deux rectangulaires, tous de surfaces actives égales. Le calcul a été fait pour des traducteurs ayant des dimensions et des fréquences de résonance correspondant au domaine d'application du diagnostic médical. On montre aussi que la position du dernier maximum dépend, entre autres facteurs, de la configuration du traducteur.
