The Variance of Decay Rates in Reverberation Rooms

This paper reports theoretical and experimental investigations of the variance of decay rates of interrupted noise bands in reverberation rooms. Two types of variance are examined. They are the variance between decay rates measured at the same microphone position and the variance between decay rates measured at different microphone positions. Theoretical formulae are developed for both types of variance. These formulae yield values of variance in good agreement with values derived experimentally in eight distinctly different reverberant spaces.


In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird über theoretische und experimentelle Untersuchungen zur Varianz der Nachhallkurvensteigungen von abgeschaltetem Bandpaßrauschen in Hallräumen berichtet. Es werden zwei verschiedene Arten der Varianz untersucht: die Varianz zwischen verschiedenen, am selben Mikrofonort gemessenen Kurven und die Varianz zwischen den Kurven für unterschiedliche Mikrofonorte. Für beide Arten werden theoretische Beziehungen hergeleitet. Die aus diesen Beziehungen errechneten Varianzwerte sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit experimentellen Werten, die in acht, deutlich unterschiedlichen Hallräumen ermittelt wurden.


On présente des recherches théoriques et expérimentales sur la variance des taux d'extinction de bandes de bruit interrompues dans des chambres de réverbération. Deux types de variance ont été examinés: celle entre taux de décroissance pour une position fixe du microphone et celle entre taux de décroissance pour différentes positions du microphone. Des formules théoriques ont été établies pour les deux types. Elles fournissent des valeurs qui sont en bon accord avec les valeurs expérimentales relevées dans huit chambres réverbérantes spécifiquement différentes.
