In the presence of two coaxial gaussian laser beams of nearly equal frequencies (|ω1 – ω2| ≪ω1) the electron temperature has an appreciably large component at |ω1 – ω2| frequency and consequently gives rise to the radiation of acoustic waves in the transverse direction. In a typical case of two 100 MW lasers around 2 × 1014 rad/s, an acoustic power of 0.2 MW per unit axial length may be generated.
