Effect of Pulse-Width on the Measurement of the Ultrasonic Shear Absorption in Viscous Liquids

The amplitude decay of pulses of shear mechanical oscillation resulting from the attenuation by a viscoelastic liquid has been investigated for varying pulse-widths. It has been shown that significant corrections must be applied to the simple exponential decay, normally associated with the measurement of the absorption coefficient, α. The modified decay scheme lends support to the measurement of α by an alternative experimental procedure.


Für unterschiedliche Pulsbreiten wurde der von der Dämpfung durch eine viskoelastische Flüssigkeit hervorgerufene Amplitudenabfall mechanischer Scherschwingungs-Pulse untersucht. Es wurde gezeigt, daß der normalerweise mit der Messung des Absorptionskoeffizienten α assoziierte, einfache exponentielle Abfall signifikant korrigiert werden muß. Das modifizierte Abklingschema legt alternative, experimentelle Anordnungen zur Messung von α nahe.


La diminution d'amplitude d'oscillations mécaniques de cisaillement du fait de leur atténuation par contact avec un liquide viscoélastique a été étudiée, en régime puisé, et en fonction de la largeur des impulsions utilisées. Il est montré que d'importantes corrections sont à apporter à la loi de décroissance simplement exponentielle qui est associée ordinairement à la mesure du coefficient d'absorption α. La loi de décroissance modifiée conduit normalement à un nouveau procédé expérimental pour mesurer α.
