This paper deals with the instantaneous excitation of unidimensional sound waves in a room bounded by rectilinear walls. The resulting field is represented by a complex integral. The physical interpretation of this integral leads to the alternative representation of the incident and echoing sound either as-a train of progressive waves or as a set of standing waves. Both descriptions are critically compared with each other.

Zusammenfassung

Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt instantan erregte, eindimensionale Schallwellen in einem quaderförmigen Raum. Die Lösung wird in Gestalt eines komplexen Integrales angegeben. Die physikalische Interpretation dieses Integrales führt auf die alternative Darstellung des Anhalls und des Nachhalls entweder als Zug aufeinanderfolgender Wanderwellen oder als Schwingungspaket stehender Wellen. Beide Beschreibungen werden kritisch miteinander verglichen.

La solution de ce problème est fournie par une intégrale complexe. L'interprétation physique de celle-ci conduit à représenter l'établissement et l'extinction du son soit comme un train d'ondes progressives soit comme un paquet d'ondes stationnaires. On discute et compare entre elles ces deux descriptions.
