Evaluation of Continuous Sound Variations

The subjective evaluation of periodic variations of the physical sound parameters was experimentally investigated. Experiments with sinusoidal modulation at 4 Hz show that variations of different parameters comprising the same number of jnd's are estimated to be equivalent. In the case of broadband sounds the resulting strength of the fluctuation sensation evoked by the modulation arises from contributions of different frequency regions. Contributions of the high frequency region of the sound spectrum preponderate compared with those of the low frequency region.
