Experimental Investigations on the Noise Effects of Street Traffic Noise

In an auditorium 93 test subjects were exposed repeatedly to nine different traffic noise situations, which had previously been recorded on tape at various traffic densities and at various distances from the street. At the end of each replayed noise recording the test subjects rated their feeling of annoyance on a scaled questionnaire.

The study of the relationship between noise and annoyance showed that the equivalent noise level L eq and the cumulative frequency noise level L 10 corresponded best to the degree of annoyance (r ind = 0.72 or 0.71) and were superior to all other acoustic parameters.
