Open Access The Influence of Fluid Flow Velocity on the Loss Factor of Plates

Download Article:
The total loss factor of a plate in flowing water is measured, in the lower frequency range essentially through hydrodynamic damping, in the higher frequency range mainly through radiation loss. As shown by the experiments the total loss factor of a plate in flowing water (U = 4.6 m/s) increases over that in stationary water, especially at low frequencies, by as much as a factor of 10. Moreover it will be clear that the loss factor of a stream swept plate decreases with increasing length (in the streamflow direction).
