Pitch Synchronous Gating in a Time-Domain Analysis of Vowel Waveforms
The time intervals between zero crossings of a voiced speech wave are extremely sensitive to noise and changes in the glottal periodicity. Statistics of these intervals can be made less dependent on such factors by processing the waveform pitch synchronously. This processing was particularly
successful for open vowels in reducing the noisiness and variability of a two dimensional statistical display of the time intervals between zero crossings of the waveform. A parallel perceptual experiment was performed applying pitch synchronous gating to the clipped waveforms of isolated
vowels. The quality and intelligibility of these vowels was slightly improved. The results of both these experiments point to the relative importance of the early part of each glottal period as opposed to the later part in carrying reliable information concerning the resonance characteristics
of the supra-glottal articulators.
